In the west wing of the monastery extension is an absorbing and gargantuan maritime museum, packed not only with models of ships, naval uniforms and artefacts from Portugal’s Oriental colonies, but also with real vessels – among them fishing boats and sumptuous state barges, plus early seaplanes. Much of the collection comes from that of King Luís I (1861–1889), a keen oceanographer.
